When Michelle Weon got her idea for a new Liberty High School club, she promptly asked Mr. Hansol Park to be the club sponsor. Soon after the Asian Culture Club was created, and is now meeting as the newest addition to the LHS extracurricular roster.

Weon wanted to create a tight night community that normalizes the culture that is inclusive for everyone.

“I was inspired to start the Asian Culture Club because I wanted to promote cross-culture and multicultural diversity here at Liberty High School,¨ said Weon.  ¨Liberty High School has a small population of Asian-American minorities. Creating a tight-knit community normalizing Asian culture will empower them and allow them to be proud of their background in today’s society. The club is welcome to everyone, regardless of race. We’re happy to see new faces.¨

On February 24, 2023, the Asian Culture Club had its interest meeting after school. Several people were in attendance and eager to learn more about what this club had to offer.

The start of this meeting was known as the icebreaker section. Students at the interest meeting stated their names and what they wanted to join the club.

“I decided to attend this interest meeting to learn more about Asian culture. I wanted to get rid of all the stereotypical facts that I knew about the culture and replace them with facts,” said senior Stephanie Kissell

Following the icebreaker portion of the meeting, Weon presented multiple slides going over the varying aspects of Asian culture.

Slides talked about the different games played across Asia and the many different food items found in different Asian countries.

The start of May marks the start of the annual observance of Asian-American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The entire month of May is used as a way to honor and call attention to the history and accomplishments that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

If students are interested in forming a broader understanding of Asian culture then joining the Asian Culture Club is a great opportunity to do that. Their last meeting was Friday March 17.
