Winter break is one of the best parts of the year, with the lights, music, and decorations. It’s all part of the amazing atmosphere. The holiday season is also a major part of winter break, many holidays take place in December from Hannakuah, and Kawanzaa, or the very popular Christmas and New Year.
For some people, winter break is a privilege but for others, it is not like for senior, Amari Hogan, and freshman, Fernando Portillo-Flores. Amari is graduating early so she doesn’t get the feeling of leaving school after months of work knowing she will eventually return. Similarly, Fernando is leaving to live in El Salvador, unfortunately, he will also not get to experience winter break. Both students will not be returning in January, unlike many other students who have yet to finish the school year.
The best part of the holidays is different depending on the people you ask. “The best part of the holidays is having a break from class and having time to do what I want to do”, said freshman, Elena Flores. When having winter break you get 2 weeks of, anything you have time to do what you want. But to most people, it’s not enough time to do whatever you want. Everyone I interviewed voted yes to a longer winter break, which of course would make sense. Another good part about winter break is one of the more important ones for many students. “It’s important to me to spend time with family and get time off school,” said senior, Diego Blanco, which is something that many people will find themselves agreeing with.
As previously mentioned, there are many holidays over winter break, and with so many different holidays, it’s unsurprising that there are many different celebrations. Some students celebrate Hanukkah, like the Laine family (Mrs. Laine, Bryar Laine, and Chase Laine) and senior, Karli Christensen while others celebrate Christmas such as Jada Shatie. These holidays are celebrated differently and with Christmas in particular, the traditions can vary depending on families however it’s still one of the largest holidays celebrated. While many people celebrate holidays over the break some people don’t and just enjoy the time off.
After winter break things are going to be different for all of us with the class changes and schedule changes, some are excited about the change, and some aren’t. “I’m only somewhat excited, new classes can be worrying but I’ll get used to them,” explains sophomore, Cian Carroll. Which can be quite relatable especially if you get nervous easily. But it’s a new opportunity for people to make new friends and see old ones and discover new interests.
Winter Break is one of the most important parts of the year, not only being a time to unwind after weeks of schoolwork but also time with family and friends over the holidays. Winter break is also a great start to the new year, where new friends, classes, and unfortunately schoolwork will once again be the focus. Unfortunately, the break doesn’t last as long as everyone would like but it’s still a great time regardless, and as long as students and especially teachers enjoy their time off, that’s all that should matter.
