Want to learn how to create those wonderful bouquets and centerpieces? Here at Liberty High School, we have our floral design class, where you’ll learn how to make them.
In a floral design class, you can learn a variety of skills and techniques related to the art of creating beautiful floral arrangements. You will first discover the importance of selecting the right combination of flowers and foliage to create striking and harmonious arrangements. Fundamental principles such as balance, proportion, scale, rhythm, and harmony.
Floral design also includes learning about the color wheel, color schemes, and how to effectively use color to evoke different emotions and moods in floral designs. You are taught to identify various types of flowers, foliage, and other botanical elements commonly used in floral arrangements. You’ll learn about the characteristics of flowers, seasonal availability, and care requirements of different botanicals. It involves learning different methods and styles of arranging flowers, including traditional, contemporary, and experimental approaches. Students learn about line, form, texture, and space in arrangement composition. Understanding these principles is essential for creating visually appealing arrangements.
You’ll learn about hydration, temperature control, and other factors that affect flower quality and the proper techniques for handling, conditioning, and preserving flowers to ensure longevity and freshness. You also have to become familiar with tools such as floral foam, wire, tape, scissors, knives, and vases so you’ll learn how to select the appropriate tools for different tasks that you are using in the class. You learn how to construct various types of bouquets, including hand-tied bouquets, cascading bouquets, and nosegays. You learn techniques for securing stems and creating a balanced and cohesive arrangement.
This class also includes learning how to create floral arrangements for different occasions and events. For example, for Valentine’s Day, we set up a flower sale in the school where students can purchase pre-made Valentine’s Day bouquets, arrangements, or single stems to give to their friends, teachers, or family members. All the money that is collected from the sale goes towards funding school programs or activities. We also decorate various areas of the school with Valentine’s Day-themed floral arrangements. This could include classrooms, hallways, common areas, and the front office, adding a festive and welcoming atmosphere to the school environment, HOCO, different parties that you’ll do at school, and corporate events. Students learn about the importance of theme, venue, and preferences in design planning. You will also learn about the business side of floral design, including pricing, marketing, client consultations, and floral design trends.
The class, Floral Design provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the art and science of floral arranging, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to create stunning floral compositions for various purposes and occasions. Also by incorporating floral design events and activities into the school curriculum, students have the opportunity to explore their creativity, develop practical skills, and cultivate an appreciation for the artistry of flowers and plants.
