Autism Acceptance Week is a week where others learn and show support for acceptance and inclusiveness. Autism Acceptance Month is every April. There are different ways to celebrate and here at Liberty, we celebrate in our own way. Autism Week is celebrated towards the end of April. During this week some different events and organizations come together to promote acceptance.
Magnificent Mind Monday is to celebrate neurological variation. Autism is a neurological variation, which means the brains of people with autism work differently than the brains of neurotypical people that is AMAZING! We Celebrate how amazing it is that all our minds work differently by wearing a hat to school. Day one was one of the most important days because it’s not just a magnificent Monday it’s also the day that others tell each other about the day and inform them about the other days to come. Neurodiversity Tuesday was to celebrate the beauty in the diverse spectrum of the human mind. We celebrated at Liberty by wearing colorful rainbow, Tie dye clothes to school. Day two is also the day that people recognize that they could be helping with autism awareness companies that help and support people with special needs. When others tell others about Autism Acceptance Week it gets spread around and more and more people start helping or explaining the situation to others.
Wednesday was “What’s Your Passion?” Wednesday. One characteristic of Autism is to show an incredibly focused passion for topics of interest, called a special interest or hyperfixation. On this day, you dress In something you’re passionate about. Day three is when people start celebrating how much we appreciate all types of people no matter their needs. Thursday was Autism Acceptance Day. Love and acceptance go a long way. On this day, you’re supposed to wear red or gold to show your support and acceptance of autistic individuals. Friday was sensory-friendly day. People with Autism often have a variety of sensory activities. On this day you’re supposed to wear your most comfy clothes. You use as much natural light as you can instead of fluorescent light and wear sunglasses.
Autism Acceptance Week is celebrated in these different ways. This week is mostly about understanding that people are different from each other, no two people are the same. Understanding how it can affect these people mentally and physically. And the most important out of all of them is inclusiveness and making them not feel different. They aren’t different, they are still humans just like the rest of us. There is no need to treat them any differently.
