The idea of running a 5k has never been at the forefront of my mind. Although I previously enjoyed running, I thought it would be redundant to participate in a 5k because running was no longer an activity I participated in for competitive reasons. Even so, when I was introduced to Anything’s PAWsible my mindset completely changed.
Anything’s PAWsible is a non-profit organization founded to help make service dogs accessible to young children with disabilities. The organization helps pair children as young as five years old with their destined service dog. As part of its efforts to support young children with disabilities, the organization hosts its annual 5k run to help raise funds and engagement throughout the community. Furthermore, the board of directors is a powerhouse made up of four incredibly intelligent and dedicated women.
Originally, I was incredibly apprehensive about signing up for the 5k but the core values of the organization quickly led me to reconsider my mindset. Shortly after I made up my mind, I paid for my ticket and I began anticipating the race. During the weeks leading up to the race, I occasionally went on runs but unfortunately, time crept up on me. I knew that even if I couldn’t perform to the best of my abilities, the fact that I could positively contribute to such an amazing organization was much more important to me.
Eventually, the day of the race approached and reality set in. Although I was originally nervous about the race being filled with overly critical people, I experienced the complete opposite. The volunteers were exceptionally kind, but what stood out to me the most was that there were people from every walk of life at the event. I was extremely surprised when I was welcomed by an incredibly diverse group of people. There were groups of people ranging from young children in strollers, to elderly people and even canines. In true Old Town Manassas fashion, there were various local businesses with their booths offering services to runners. Additionally, there was a band performing and as the beginning time for the race approached, all runners were called together to commence a group warm-up. The warm-up promptly ended in preparation for a very memorable speech by the founder of the organization, Jennifer Shively.
Finally, all of the runners lined up and the race shortly commenced. The race was mentally challenging as I expected, but was bearable for someone who doesn’t run daily. The race was filled with encouraging volunteers which alleviated the stress and pressure associated with completing the race. As runners crossed the finish line, they were awarded medals and were provided with water and snacks to replenish themselves. The aftermath of the race was an event open to everyone in the community. There were performers in attendance and food trucks lined up along the sides of the road, which further contributed to the welcoming atmosphere of the race.
Overall, running a 5k with the Anything’s PAWsible organization was immensely gratifying. I would recommend this particular 5k to anyone in the area because races can be incredibly daunting to beginner runners, but the atmosphere at this event can help alleviate any unnecessary stress. I wouldn’t do anything differently if I had a chance to redo my experience. Taking part in this 5k and helping others while simultaneously challenging myself has truly made me feel like anything is possible.
