Most people don’t like waking up early, especially teenagers. This isn’t just because teenagers are lazy and don’t like waking up early, but is influenced by many other contributing factors. All adults were teenagers once, they all know how it is, yet we’re still made to get up at 6 in the morning even when they didn’t want to. It just doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense in hindsight, So I’d like to dive more into why teenagers have to wake up so early, and how waking up later could benefit teenagers, and to present my personal opinion on the topic.
Most people don’t enjoy waking up early, teenagers may feel, or think they are going through a lot, and productivity might not be the main focus. The most prominent causes for this in teenagers in the modern day are anxiety and depression, but that’s something most teenagers go through.
School is another large factor and also plays into the depression part of it. Waking up earlier than you ever would, to do something you don’t want to do, every day, can be stressful for the teenage mind. And as a teenager, you want to focus on everything but school. Whether it’s the fact you want to live your teenage years having fun and making memories, or you’re depressed and don’t feel like getting out of bed, or maybe you even have a medical issue that hinders you in some way, all of these can be contributing factors as to why teenagers don’t enjoy waking up early for school.
Then again, some students are lazy, and schools can teach responsibility and manners to kids. It’s a place to learn, and as much as we didn’t like it in the beginning, it’s most definitely necessary for us as a society. Nevertheless, teenagers have their lives going on, and this is when we’re all trying to figure out how our lives work, school is necessary but stressful.
Based on the research by Kris Swartzenruber at (https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/teens_and_sleep) Teenagers experience a shift in their internal alarm clock, making them want to sleep in longer and sleep later. Everybody has an internal clock, but the internal clock of a child is far different from the internal clock of an adult. This is because of the body’s circadian rhythm, which is affected by almost everything, the main influences being stress, food intake, temperature, and sunlight.
School is fine the way it is. By pushing the hours a little bit further into the day, more problems would be introduced than solutions. School is early in the day so we have time later in the day. We’d have to readjust everything just for a few more hours of sleep. The school hours are made to make the work easier for the adults, not the students. If school started later in the day, It would change around the adults’ schedules and scheduling for students way too much for it to be a viable option.
