The Super Bowl is the championship game in the National Football League. The two teams that make it to the Super Bowl are the winners of the conferences, AFC and NFC. The name ‘Super Bowl’ came about in 1969 and is recognized by the Roman numerals the NFL uses to title the Super Bowl every year. This year’s Super Bowl marks the LIX Super Bowl, also known as the 59th Super Bowl, where 2 teams, the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs faced off for the Championship title.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been a strong force in the NFL in the past 6 years, appearing in 5 of the last 6 Super Bowls. The Chiefs faced off against the 49ers in the 2020 Super Bowl taking the victory, but fell short to the Buccaneers in 2021. The Chiefs didn’t make it to the Super Bowl in 2022 but were back the next year to take on the Eagles. The Chiefs beat the Eagles and reappeared in 2024 to take on the 49ers. The Chiefs repeated history beating the 49ers again. This year the Chiefs were trying to make history by winning 3 Super Bowls in a row.
The Eagles wanted this game more than ever, considering their tough loss to the Chiefs in 2023. They won their first Super Bowl title in 2017, overtaking the New England Patriots in a 41-33 win. The Eagles have been eager to win their second title and hope this year will finally be that year.
The rivalry between the Chiefs and Eagles became popular in their 2023 mashup due to it being nicknamed the “Kelce Bowl” because both brothers, Jason and Travis Kelce, were facing off against each other, becoming the first set of siblings to face off against each other in the Super Bowl. Younger brother, Travis, took the victory and after last season Jason Kelce has officially retired. This matchup has become exciting, with fans eager to see who would take home the title.
Kansas City won the coin toss and opted to defer the ball. The game was stagnant until the mid-first quarter when the Eagles scored the first touchdown of the game on their patented tush push play. The Eagles went for the kick and it was good, making the score 7-0. The score stayed the same throughout the rest of the first quarter, making the game engaging but not exciting for either team.
In the second quarter, the Eagles stayed on top, forcing turnover after turnover for the Chiefs. This Super Bowl meant more to the Eagles and you could see that in the way they were playing. Pressuring the quarterback, forcing fumbles and interceptions, the Eagle’s defense was on fire, helping ignite their offense into scoring more touchdowns. By the end of the first half the score was 24-0.
If you’re not a football fan, but still find yourself watching the Super Bowl, every halftime performance is usually your highlight of the game. This year’s halftime performer was rapper, Kendrick Lamar. Kendrick had an incredible performance. His performance wasn’t necessarily designed to display his music as much as it was to send a message to America. He used great performance to show how African Americans are treated and portrayed poorly in America. Musical artist, Solana Imana Rowe, also known as SZA, made a feature in the performance, doing a duet to the songs ‘Luther’ and ‘All the Stars.’ Overall, it was a great performance, keeping people’s energy alive for the second half of the Super Bowl.
Like the first quarter, the score stayed steady until mid-quarter. Eagles kicker, Jake Elliot, made a 29-yard field goal, sending the score to 27-0. By the end of the quarter, the score was 34-6, meaning that both teams scored a touchdown. However, the Chiefs decided to go for the 2-point conversion on their drive, but in the end did not succeed. The Eagles simply went for the kick, which was the right move, giving them the extra point.
In the 4th quarter, it wasn’t looking good for the Chiefs. The Chiefs didn’t answer back to the Eagles until late in the 4th quarter when Mahomes threw a short touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins. The Chiefs had one final touchdown at the end of the game, securing the 2-point conversion following that play, but in the end, the Chiefs came up way short of the Eagles. The final score was 40-22, giving the Philidelphia Eagles the victory.
Philly fans couldn’t have been happier. Each team worked hard this season, but something in the Eagle’s blood had them hungry for this win. The Eagles forced the Chiefs to have multiple turnovers, which is something you don’t see from the Chiefs often. Overall, it was a high-scoring and intriguing game for fans, but an even better game for the Eagles.
