Secondary classes, non-core classes, and electives. All names for the same thing: classes you choose to take alongside your core classes like math, science, and language arts. Electives, while not as important as your core classes, still hold great worth! They can show you interests you would’ve never explored and can be the perfect classes to destress from the struggles your core classes provide you. So with all the options at Liberty, what do you pick? I think you should pick journalism, and here’s why!
A class isn’t made by its content, the teacher makes it. You can be in a subject you despise and aren’t skilled at, and with the right teacher, they can improve it to be something you’ll think of fondly after you’re done. Mrs. Zimmer does this perfectly! She is an extremely fair teacher as long as you are fair to her, and she respects you as an adult! She will treat you fairly and hold you to the same standard as the rest of the class. But there are more reasons you should join journalism.
School work. It’s not the most fulfilling thing most of the time. Writing ten essays on a book you don’t care about but act like you do, or doing an endless swarm of problems with formulas that make about as much sense as Latin makes sense to a baby. These bits of work are unfulfilling and bring no joy. However, Journalism doesn’t have this problem! The work is fulfilling as you pick your article topic, and can write as you wish! This solves the problem of work being unfulfilling and gives at least one of your classes some fulfillment too!
Lastly, journalism also has one more benefit. The work cycle is extremely forgiving. Every two weeks, you have to turn in an article. It gives you two weeks to research, study, interview, and prepare an article. Have other work you need to get done? Finish your article before the due date, and now you’ve got the chance to catch up on that other work! Two weeks is more than enough time to complete an article, which means you’ll nearly always have some free time to do what you wish! This, I’ve found, makes the school day so much better and makes me less stressed overall!
Electives are required. You can’t evade them even if you wish to. So, if you’re going to do something with them, pick journalism! The teacher is spectacular at her job and has a very welcoming environment. The work is extremely rewarding and makes you feel like all the hours of school aren’t a waste.
