On the Friday before spring break, the staff and students came together for a friendly competition. The senior class typically hosts all the student vs staff games to help raise money for events like graduation and the senior picnic. The students vs staff volleyball game was held in the gym during the fourth block.
In the first period, the students started strong, but the staff was trying to fight back. The staff team was trying to push the pressure. Then, out of nowhere, senior Kenny Benitez Campos spiked the ball at the end of the first period. The students took the lead. The staff had 3, and the students had 21.
During the second period, the staff team’s Mr. Cox accidentally hit the ball out of bounds. While Mr. Diaz tried to help, it wasn’t enough, and the students took another point. Then senior Toby James spiked the ball. At the end of the second period, the staff had 17 points, and the students had 18 points.
For the 3rd period, the commentators had a separate rule that said the winner takes all for the game. When both sides heard the rule, they tried to take advantage to win. On the student’s team, senior Kenny Benitez Campos was so focused on the game, he seemed to forget what game he was playing and kicked the ball. On the staff team, Coach Heppei hits the ball out of bounds, giving the students another edge. The students took advantage of the staff getting tired, so they took the lead. When the game was over, the students managed to win over the staff. The staff team had 10 players, and the students had 21.
It was an awesome experience to see the staff and students compete in a small competition. It was fun to see some of the teachers and coaches outside of their element. It was cool to see some of the kids cheer for both sides or one of the sides.
The staff vs students volleyball game was a great way to start spring break because it created excitement for the upcoming vacation. Sophomore Naleiah Tibbs, “ I was surprised that the students won because the staff has won a couple of times in the past years.” Looks like it the students and staff had a good time, and everyone else had fun watching the game.
