Abandon is a book written by Meg Cabot that came out in 2011. It is a young adult book involving romance, fantasy, and murder mystery. The main setting of the book is an island called Isla Huesos. Meg Cabot is 58 years old and has written and published over 80 novels of young adult and adult fiction and is best known for her series The Princess Diaries that later ended up being adapted into two movies. This book is also a retelling of the story of Hades abducting Persephone and keeping her in the underworld.
The book is from 17 year old Pierce Oliviera’s point of view, who recently had a near death experience. Her parents recently got divorced so now she lives with her mom; they just moved back to her mom’s hometown Isla Huesos. She goes to the local high school now, where every year they have a tradition where they hide a casket and then burn it, this is a really important detail that the author explains more about later on in the book. There is a love interest in this book but I cannot say anything about him or I will spoil a very important detail in the book. A couple people get killed in this book and there is a very big plot twist at the end of the book.
What I really liked about this book is how the author used really good imagery throughout this book so I could really see what was going on in the book. Good imagery is something that is important to me for an author to do so I can imagine what characters look like, houses, etc. I really liked the plot twist at the end, it was really unexpected. I also enjoyed the romance parts of the book, it really got me hooked on reading it. The only thing that I didn’t like about this book is how short it is, it only has 304 pages. The fantasy parts of the book explores what happens after death and it also says that ghosts are real.
If you’re a fantasy, romance, or murder mystery book fan then this book is definitely for you. This book was so good that I finished it in one sitting. A book review from a website called Slateview.com says “Overall though, I really enjoyed this book, and I think this most recent effort is one more reminder that Meg Cabot is not only a defining figure in the canon of YA Literature, she is totally a Slatebreaker in her own right.” Overall, this is a great Young Adult book and the author is truly amazing. If you haven’t read this book yet you should consider reading it because I found it captivating. Also, the covers are pretty so that’s a plus.
