Between the rush of practices, games, and schoolwork, student-athletes often find it hard to slow down. But on October 1, 2025, Morgan’s Message members took a well-deserved break to unwind through yoga during SOAR. The club offers yoga sessions monthly to its members. The students who attended the yoga activity seemed to have enjoyed it, finding it relaxing and a way to escape from their duties as athletes or as students.
Morgan’s Message is a nationwide organization that aims to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health in student-athletes. The club encourages open conversations about emotional wellness and provides a safe space for students to share their experiences and support one another.
Special Education, Mrs.Lithuculm is the sponsor of the club, once being an athlete and cheerleader herself, and wished her high school had a club dedicated to student-athlete mental health like Morgan’s Message. Activities like yoga help calm a busy mind that’s filled with stress. “It gives kids an opportunity to take that break,” Mrs.Lithiculm said. “Your minds are always going, you’re always thinking about what the next thing is and you don’t have that opportunity to kinda just, take a minute to recollect.”
A few students who are a part of Morgan’s message who also participated in the Yoga have similar words with Mrs.Lithiculum. “Mental Health is a really important thing and Yoga offers a piece of mind and it really just helps with your mind to calm down,” said, junior, Addison Colbert’s take on the effectiveness of monthly yoga. The students we interviewed shared the same point of view and thought; that Yoga was relieving from the burden of school activities, and truly gives them a clearer perspective. Yoga also helps them build mental strength that translates into their sport performance. Many students expressed that even a short yoga session during SOAR helped them refocus for the rest of the week, proving how valuable mindfulness activities can be for student-athletes. Some sports teams have even incorporated short mindfulness exercises before practices. The club plans to continue hosting monthly yoga sessions and is looking to add other mindfulness activities to participate in.
Beyond yoga, the club also promotes mental health awareness through discussions, outreach campaigns, and partnerships with other student organizations. Members often wear Morgan’s Message bracelets or stickers to spark conversations about mental health and encourage others to speak up when they’re struggling. In the past, they have also invited guest speakers to talk about balancing mental health and athletics. “It helps me think of positive things before games,” Olivia Jacobs expresses how Morgan’s Message helps her as an athlete. Olivia joined the club for its positivity towards a good mindset, and the support of student athletes.
With growing awareness around student mental health, clubs like Morgan’s Message play an important role in showing that taking care of your mind is just as important as physical training or grades. Small breaks, like yoga, remind students that self-care can make a big difference in performance and overall happiness on and off the field.
