Colleen Hoover is a well known author who has received the “Best Selling Author” title. Hoover is known for many of her novels, but most notably, It Ends With Us, November 9, It Starts With Us, and Verity. However, one other novel that, to me, stands above the rest, is Regretting You.
Regretting You was published on December 10, 2019. Regretting You, along with other Colleen Hoover novels, are considered a part of the romance genre; however, Regretting You has a lot more to it than just romance.
Regretting you is about a mother, Morgan, and her teenage daughter, Clara, that don’t really get along that well. Morgan got pregnant with Clara when she was very young and is always trying to make sure Clara doesn’t make the same mistakes she did when she was younger; however, Clara is just a teenage girl who wants freedom and for her mom to not watch over her every move. The day after Morgan’s birthday, an accident happens, which reveals some HUGE secrets in their family, completely changing their lives. After the accident, Morgan and Clara start to butt heads even more. Because while Morgan is trying to rebuild her life, Clara is stuck dealing with grief, teenage love, and growing up all at the same time.
One thing I really liked about the Novel is how it switches between Morgan and Clara’s point of view which helps provide background information for how each character is feeling which helps keep the story flowing as well as interesting. The main part about switching points of view that makes the novel engaging is how you get to see how each character reacts to the same event. For example, in Regretting You, you are able to see their thoughts about what’s happening which gives the reader a chance to compare and contrast the two characters’ different ways of grieving.
As a hopeless romantic, the romance aspect of the novel is definitely my favorite. Clara has a love interest named Miller Adams who is featured throughout the whole novel. Miller and Clara go to school together and throughout the whole novel, he is Clara’s safe space to grief, which is super wholesome. Though Clara uses him in a way, they still bounce back from every issue and their relationship grows stronger. Morgan also has a love interest in the book, but you will just have to read to find out…
I would recommend this book to hopeless romantics like me, or even just mothers and daughters. Because, like I mentioned, though the majority of the novel has its romance aspect, there is also the mother-daughter relationship that is just as good. Both Morgan and Clara have to learn how to live with each other, or even be around each other, while grieving. And although they struggled for a long time, they were able to bounce back in the end.
If I could give Regretting You a rating, I would give it 10 stars, 5 stars, or whatever else is equivalent to 100%. Regretting You is an amazing novel that is definitely in my top 3 books of all time, along with Colleen Hoover’s other novel, November 9. Overall, Regretting You is worth the read. I, myself, am a slow reader, but because Colleen Hoover made the novel so engaging with new obstacles to overcome, and different plot twists revealing themselves constantly, instead of reading it slowly, I was flying
through it.
If you aren’t a big reader, or just want to see Colleen Hoover’s story come to life, Regretting You is now in theatres as of Friday, October 24.
