“Turns out I’m good at track too,” said junior Isabelle Cavins, who has been running winter track since freshman year.

It started as an attempt to condition herself for softball season, but track has become an equally successful endeavor.

One of her biggest goals when she started was to beat the 55-meter dash record before she graduated from Liberty High School. That goal was reached this year. Cavins qualified for states in the 55-meter dash and also broke the school record with a time of 7.48 seconds.

Since then, she’s continued to break records and get faster.

“I qualified for states at the beginning of the season which allowed me to use the rest of the season to try different things to see what works best for me,” said Cavins.

Cavins has always been a hard worker and she’s continued to push herself to get better this season.

“She thrives academically and takes hard-level courses. She is super driven and has high standards. She always wants to put 100 percent effort and is a team player,” said head coach of track and field, Helene Leigh.

Coach Leigh has been coaching Isabelle since her freshman year.

“Freshman year she was one of the fastest runners on the team as a freshman. She was the fastest runner for the 55- meter dash freshman year running at a 7.88,” said Leigh.

Cavins has a lot of potential and she has shown major growth over these 3 years.

“She has progressed in a similar pattern like some of our most successful athletes. Freshman year she overcame an injury and sophomore year she missed state qualifying by 1/200th of a second. For most people that is defeating but she came back her junior year and broke the school record, qualified for two events at states, and place 5th in the state meet,” said Coach Leigh.

Isabelle Cavins is one of the best runners Liberty High School has had. She has a good support system and she brings a positive attitude to the track team. She’s on track to becoming one of the best runners Liberty High School has had.
