Students’ senses peak as the weather cools down and the leaves start to change color. Visualizations of the fall season start to begin as candles, blankets, and sweatshirts come out. After living in the world for many years, students begin to create generalizations about each season, and considering fall crept up on us really quickly.
Colors are a simple characteristic to associate with a season. They can be very descriptive at times because of how they fit their seasons. Many people associate colors with the weather, but some people think about the colors differently. “I think of the colors brown, orange, and yellow because they remind me of the leaves I used to jump in when I was little,” said freshman, Olivia Arey. “When I hear about fall, I think of the color orange because of the pumpkins I carve every year for Halloween,” said freshman, Josie Meredith.
Another thing that can be a distinguishing characteristic when describing a season is scent. The scents are a great way to characterize a season especially when you really want to capture a season’s aesthetic. “I associate the scent of cinnamon with fall because it reminds me of the warm vibe that fall gives off,” said freshman Chloe Thompson. “When I think of fall, I think of the smell of rain. I also think of the scent of my freshly dried blanket, whose warmth and cozy feeling gets me ready for a lovely nap,” said freshman, Malia Mitchell.
Tastebuds thrive when the seasons change. New holiday foods and drinks start to be sold in stores or are made at home. Food and drinks are a great way to remember a season, especially when that season is fall. “I associate fall with warm apple cider with whipped cream and cinnamon on top. It’s such a nostalgic drink to have on a chilly day,” said junior, Azaria Martin.
“Hot tea reminds me of fall because it makes me feel warm when it is getting windy and cold outside,” said junior, Dominique Quinn.
One more thing that is great to connect with fall is clothing. Clothing is a great thing to characterize the new weather taking over, or a great way to characterize the holiday seasons coming to you. “I associate sweaters with fall because they are nice and comfy on a chilly fall day,” said freshman, Michael Rasnick. “I associate jeans with fall because they don’t keep you too warm. Jeans keep you just warm enough for the fall,” said senior, Braden Perry.
With it officially being fall, all of these associations fall into place. The cool weather and holidays play a key role in everyone’s connections. Fall has an incredibly beautiful aesthetic which makes it very easy to associate with. As the leaves paint a tapestry of vibrant hues, the crisp air carries the promise of new beginnings. It’s a season that invites us to savor the beauty of change, reminding us that even in moments of transition, there is a unique and timeless charm that leaves an undeniable mark on our hearts.
