Liberty students spent A Night in Greece, at the 2023-2024 annual prom. The preparation behind prom can make the event a demanding experience. Typically, students put hours into hair and makeup, but the most strenuous task can be finding the perfect dress for the special occasion. A lot of thought and details are put into selecting a dress such as personal style, comfort, and the overall theme.
Although the theme involved references to the film Mama Mia!, a plethora of students decided against wearing a dress that followed the theme. Many students felt that wearing a dress that compliments their personality and personal style is crucial to feeling confident throughout the night.
“I wanted a dress that suited my personality. I’ve been really into dark red, so I specifically looked for a dress that was that color. I also love wearing long-sleeved clothes which made it hard to find a dress but I eventually found something that met all of my requirements,” said senior Brooke Boone.
Although a majority picked a dress based on their personal preferences, style isn’t always at the forefront of people’s minds. Many people picked dresses and shoes that would be the most comfortable throughout the night.
“I was looking for a dress that stood out to me but was also comfortable. I’m a sponsor for the Student Council so I usually pick something comfortable over something ‘fashionable.’ Since I have to stand there for four hours, I typically wear heels so I’m not uncomfortable,” explained history teacher, Kristen Hunsley.
On the other hand, some students felt that an on-theme dress was pertinent to the prom experience.
“I purchased my prom dress last year, so I’ve had it all along. When I found out that the prom theme was A Night in Greece I knew that the dress I already had was perfect for the occasion. My dress is rose gold and I love it because it looks good on me and follows the prom theme,” said senior Ava-sol Figueroa.
Prom is a universal experience in most American high schools, which is why most students emphasize finding attire that suits them. Regardless of personal preference, most students can attest that an elegant dress is quintessential to the experience. Many students felt that being dressed up to the nines was the best farewell to Liberty High School.
“It’s my last year of high school so I really placed such an importance on prom. Since it’s my last year, I knew I couldn’t wait until the last minute like I did in previous years. All I knew when I was picking out my dress was that it had to be good. I was looking for something elegant and regal. I ended up picking a long blue dress,” said senior Aden Yates.
The perfect dress is one of the most critical elements that goes into prom. Whether or not someone chooses to follow the assigned theme, confidence is the most important factor. Prom is a way for students to express themselves and make memories with their friends.
