Voices from Different Grades: Expectations and Excitement for the New Semester

There are many things for students to look forward to this upcoming school year. With it being the 30th anniversary of Liberty High School, students can expect more events and activities celebrating the milestone. Students from all backgrounds at Liberty have a diverse set of opinions about the school and what they feel separates it from their experience in middle school or at other high schools. Students were eager to share their opinions, expectations, and what they were excited about this school year.

The freshman class is new to Liberty and excited to start their high school career. They expected the classes to be harder like their middle school teachers said they would be. They also thought navigating was a little bit easier than they anticipated. Though they still may be getting lost, they feel that they have already gotten used to being a high school student here at Liberty.

“I got lost on like the first two days but now I’m used to it.” said freshman, Jazylnn (Jazzy) Williams.

Some of the things they were excited about, and are now enjoying, are a bigger gym, more lunch options, clubs, and the choices of different/new classes.

“I’m really excited about the clubs, I joined as many clubs as I could and I can’t wait for the stuff we’ll be doing.” said freshman, Genesis Rodriguez-Romero.

While everyone seemed to be thrilled to start high school, one thing that they weren’t enjoying as much, and were expecting something different, was the lunch shifts. An abundance of people wanted to sit with their friends and were upset that they had different lunches. But with it being a few weeks into school, students have adapted to the change and are looking forward to making new friends at lunch during the first and second semesters of high school!

For the sophomores of Liberty High School, they expect themselves to get good grades and accomplish their goals for the year. Already thinking about college, many sophomores know what kind of school they want to go to in the future and are working hard to get there. “Once I turn sixteen, I plan on getting a summer job,” said sophomore, Diana Navarro.

Most of our sophomores are excited about sports, clubs, and school events.

“I am excited to see if we do anything special since it is the 30th year,” said sophomore Austin Lewis.

Just another step closer to becoming seniors next year, the junior’s biggest excitement this year is driving, and of course, sports. Students say getting behind the wheel will give them a taste of freedom.

“I think Junior year is the hardest out of all the grades because of all the tests we have to take,” said junior, Isaac Cavins.

Most juniors are expected to prepare for their PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams. All they expect is to survive and get an “acceptable” score. They’re hoping that senior year will be more fun than stressful. They feel like time is just flying by so fast!

Looking back on their high school years, a few seniors have given some advice to their freshman selves. The key piece of advice they recommended was to join more clubs.

“As a Freshman, I wasn’t as involved as I wanted to be. Looking back at it now, getting involved in clubs is a great way to make new friends, and I wish I would’ve done that sooner,” said senior Nora Duncan.

Considering that the seniors are graduating in roughly seven months, we asked the students if they were ready to leave high school. The common answer was no. Students expressed that they are very sad about leaving Liberty next summer and that they don’t know what they’ll do without all of their friends, staff, and most importantly Principal, Samuel R. Cox. Not only is Principal Cox their principal, but he is also their friend.  When asking the students what they’re excited about for their senior year, the top two answers were sports and graduation.

“I’m really excited for my final season for sports. I love sports. I’m also excited to walk the stage and get my diploma,” said senior Andrew Ryman.

Hi, my name is Elena Flores, and I’m a freshman here at Liberty high school. I love anything that has to do with the arts, such as dance, music, and drawing. I would describe myself as very creative and open to new ideas, which is why I took this class for the semester. I look forward to getting to know my new school better and interacting with new people. I write sports articles on the school which can include updates, useful, or just interesting information. You may see me writing more articles in the future!
