Here at Liberty, there is a wide variety of classes and electives to take throughout four years, with new classes being added and new options opening up yearly. These classes play a big impact in some students’ lives, especially career wise. What you take in school can change the course of your career path easily. Students find some of these classes more interesting or more important to them instead of others, usually being able to relate with the topic with curiosity.
A post on the Liberty Publications Instagram was a poll on what students here at Liberty think are one of the most important classes here that are taught.
Woman History:
Woman’s history is a class taught by Mrs.Marjerowicz, which is exactly what it sounds like. Women’s history is a chance to open gaps of history you’ve learned in history since elementary school and the women who were truly behind some of the greatest pieces of human history.
“All the other history classes are very male dominated,” said senior Katie Crile. “You have heard about George Washington since you were in fourth grade. It’s really good to learn about women you have never heard before, and how women have shaped the world.” Women’s history class is not only just a class but could be considered a step further into appreciating the gender that has been discriminated against since the early stages of human life.
Ag Classes:
Agriculture classes are taught by Mrs.Loring, Mrs. Burton, and Mrs. Locuraltolo. Here in Fauquier, it’s a very rural place. There are a lot of schools out there that don’t have these classes. Since we live more in a country area, many job opportunities are farming and working with animals/marketing things and all of the above for agriculture. The subjects offer a career opener for many students, and provide useful knowledge and other classes like Floral design, Weidling, Animal care, and more agriculturally-based classes.
Weight Lifting:
Weight lifting is a class dedicated to physical training. It helps build muscle and keep in shape, especially if you’re a busy student who doesn’t have the money for equipment at home or doesn’t have time to drive thirty minutes to an hour to a gym, this class makes it easier to take care of your body and make it fit. “I believe weight lifting is a good class because it teaches you discipline and hard work,” said senior Carson Martinelly Avalos. “Weight lifting teaches you the fundamental structure of health and human anatomy, ensuring a healthy and fit semester of the school year”
Cosmetology:
Cosmetology is similar to agriculture in the career aspect. Taking it in high school allows someone to graduate and immediately take on the job in the cosmetology field, unless they want to go to college for it. “I knew that if I picked up hair I could possibly get a really good job, and meet a lot of people like me,” explained senior Remy Pena, a cosmetologist who is taking the class for her future, and many others are most likely thinking the same way.
Photojournalism:
Photojournalism, or Yearbook, is run by Mrs.Zimmer. Yearbook is not only a class, but is also considered a club. Yearbook, though gives a small amount of career opportunities outside of graphic design and a few others, can be considered one of the most important classes in high school. Without Yearbook class, there wouldn’t be any sort of Yearbook for the whole year, making it an important class not only to the students, but also financially to the school. Taking the class can enhance your social skills, photography, writing and brings you a lot closer to LHS students and staff as a whole.
Each student’s electives and classes grow more personalised as you get closer to graduation. Some may argue Biology is more important than Algebra, and vice versa, but these opinions show that depending on future career and what the student connects to on an emotional basis could make a class useful. “I feel like everybody takes the normal classes, but you choose your own electives, and it helps you with your career,” said, junior Travis Moyer. ”For example, I’m taking JROTC, and going to college to do ROTC. There’s people who do AG because they want to be farmers and there are people who do languages because they want to go abroad. I think electives are important to help you with your career and help you learn about yourself. That’s why you have multiple electives to choose from and are able to choose what you want your path to be in life.”
