Nine months ago, I walked into high school nervous to start over at the bottom of the social ladder. Now, freshman year is almost over, and I realize how much it changed me. And as much as I’m ready for summer, my freshman year will always hold a special place in my heart because of all of the memories, lessons, and people that I wouldn’t have met if it wasn’t for my freshman year.
High school is a time for change, changes that shape you into who you are. You may lose friends that you never thought you would lose. You’ll meet new people and gain friendships that will play a big part in helping you find your own way. There is so much more diversity once you get to high school; so many different groups of people, so you will find your people. Do what you want and don’t worry about what others think. There are so many opportunities for you to do whatever interests you, don’t waste them. Use this as a time to explore and try new things. I promise you that upperclassmen are not that scary. You could very easily become friends with lots of upperclassmen. Don’t be afraid to be friendly and talk to everyone.
The many opportunities that I’ve mentioned include sports, clubs, and events. Those opportunities, if you decide to take them, can make your high school experience. Don’t be afraid to get involved and join clubs, try out for sports, and attend school events. You will create many relationships and meet so many new people and create so many memories you’ll carry with you.
Academics, take them seriously. You are a high school student now. Every class you take, final grade you receive, credit you earn, and your GPA will be recorded on your transcript. Your transcript is what colleges examine to determine if they want to accept you. Think about your future before you decide to slack off your freshman year. Many upperclassmen have said these exact words to me. It only gets harder from here. And yes now is the time to start thinking about what you want your future to look like but that doesn’t mean you need to know everything. Find what interests you and explore career paths. People will ask you what you want to do with your life. Everytime, I answer with “I don’t know yet” and that’s okay. It’s okay to not know. Just keep focusing on doing your best in school and enjoy your youth because it’ll be over before you know it.
Don’t be afraid of not having friends in your class. First of all, it’s nearly impossible to have your best friends in all of your classes. Second, you will meet new people and make friends. There’s so many people that could become a big part of your life and you don’t even know. Yes, it can be nerveracking. Try to turn any fear and anxiety into excitement. Stay positive about your upcoming high school experience. Remind yourself of all of the interesting classes you can take, clubs, sports, and people to meet. You will remember your high school years all your life so let the memories be full of joy rather than regret. If you listen to nobodies’ advice, have fun and enjoy your youth. You are only young once.
