Teachers are the heart of the education system, helping students grow academically and personally every day. Teacher Appreciation Week gives students and schools a chance to recognize the hard work teachers put in throughout the year. It all started back in 1953 when Eleanor Roosevelt convinced congress to make a day specifically to celebrate teachers. Then as the years went on it became a whole week!! Here at liberty high school some of the clubs held breakfast for all the teachers. The teachers even had their own secret spirit week. On Monday it was Pajama day, Tuesday was to drink out of anything but a water bottle, Wednesday was to wear a wig, holiday Thursday, vacation Friday. Many students made cards for teachers and on Monday May 4th students went around the school handing them out. Students have said that they take this week to appreciate their teachers because they help with work and they are a great shoulder to lean on.
The article is in honor of all the teachers who don’t get told that they are appreciated as often as they should. Teachers go unappreciated all the time even though they put their all into making sure that students get the education they deserve. A 2023 study showed that fewer than 25% of teachers don’t feel valued, even though they play a major role in the development of students’ careers. This job is extremely important and needs to be recognized as such. In this Article there will be interviews from students at liberty highschool and also teachers who work here. There’s very lovely things said by students who talk
Junior Azalia Reyes, has a really special place in her heart for Mrs. Jenkins, the sponsor of the HOSA club here at Liberty who also teaches multiple medical field related classes. “I appreciate her because she takes time out of her day to help students. She manages a club hosa and also she has three different classes: child development, medical assistant one and 2 and intro health and med. I’ve known her since freshman year and each year I’ve had a class with her so I’ve spent a lot of time with her, and she helps a lot with everything. She’s the type of person who gets along with all students and not just students but with everyone around. She’s very considerate when it comes to assignments because she understands that sometimes things come up.”“Mrs. Jenkins puts all her hard work and dedication into teaching and into the club she manages so that is why its important she receives recognition”
Junior, Shavaun Martin really appreciates Mrs. Jost, the study hall teacher. She mentioned in an interview that Mrs. Jost has been very welcoming to her and helpful.“She lets me in her class and she is just very helpful. I wouldn’t be the student I am today if it wasn’t for her. She treats students like they are her own kids. So students just get a special bond with her that I don’t think they get with other teachers. I met her at the beginning of sophomore year. She’s helped me with a lot of situations, not just school but with real life. She’s helped me get through them.”“She is always there to help anyone no matter who it is you ask her and she will help you.”
When interviewing people many students gave the common themes of the teachers being motivational, supportive and kind. Teachers often go home straight to planning or even thinking about issues that they were told. Teachers get overlooked all the time and it’s not fair because they have so much going on. Teachers are the backbone of the education system; they help students become successful young adults. A good teacher with a good attitude and personality can often improve a student’s attendance and grades. Teachers who promote mental health, having a social and emotional well being often result in long term economical gains. Liberty high school students make cards for the teachers during teacher appreciation week. Staff members give out gifts every morning for the teachers during this week as well. During morning announcements the principal Mr. Cox announced to teachers that there was food in the work room for them. He also always makes sure to let the teachers know they are appreciated and that he’s thankful for them. DECA and FBLA clubs here at liberty held a breakfast for the teachers the members of the club helped organize.
Many students believe teachers deserve more recognition for the work they do both inside and outside the classroom. . Teachers can often have a long term effect that many people don’t think about till they realize they are the person they are because of a teacher’s impact. They are tough on students because they care and they want to see their students succeed. There’s been multiple times where at least someone has been frustrated with a teacher yet they don’t take the time to realize that they mean well and that they want nothing but the best for students. Next time you are frustrated with teachers, take a moment to realize that they want the best quality work from you. That’s why they are strict because who knows it could possibly change you.
“A good education can change anyone however a good teacher can change everything”– unknown
